Government reveals new support to protect interns' right to fair pay
Companies who engage interns or individuals work experience should be aware of the Government's increased activity in monitoring companies' compliance with their obligations to ensure that interns receive pay. Government activity in this area includes the following:-
- New government guidance will provide further support to interns about their pay rights.
- HMRC is targeting 200 employers which are advertising intern opportunities to ensure compliance with national minimum wage regulations.
Employers should bear in mind that if an individual makes a contribution to the business, they are entitled to be paid at least the national minimum wage. If an individual is genuinely on work experience (for example a short period of time which mostly spent shadowing others), payment is not required, but in many cases the engagement of unpaid interns is unlawful.
